Eulogy by Jon Robertson Brother (CHS 1980) of Mark Robertson (CHS 1975) Eulogy given on July 5th 2017:
Good afternoon, I am going to provide Mark’s eulogy from the vantage point of chapters in his life and from the lens of his little brother.
Chapter 1 The Early Days/Renaissance Kid:
Growing up I can vividly recall my blonde-haired brother excelling at whatever he did. I had the honor of being the bat boy for Mark’s perennial championship Little League baseball team, Mel Bennell Chevrolet. Watching Mark hit a baseball or better stated “smoke” a baseball for a base hit or home run, appeared to be done effortlessly. It was not until I started playing baseball, that I knew my brother Mark was something special. In addition to being a great baseball player, Mark also excelled at football. To illustrate his God given talent at the age of 9, Mark entered the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition sponsored by the NFL. He of course won not only the local event but the regional competition.
Mark shared with my son's Zach & Bryce, that on a vacation when he was about 10 years old he found out that the San Francisco 49ers were conducting their preseason training workouts. Mark proceeded to the field whereby he chased down a few footballs that were overthrown by some star NFL quarterback, and returned them to the coach. They happen to notice how fast Mark was and his ability to catch and throw. The coaching staff said “Hey kid, could you come back tomorrow and help out”.
Under his Renaissance man umbrella, Mark also entered an art competition with local artists when he was in middle school and of course took home 1st place. As his credits role on, he even named me Jonathan (named after his imaginary friend when he was young kid) as I found just recently from my Mom on a visit up to see Mark. He truly did it all!
Chapter 2 The High School Days:
A few select vivid memories of Mark in High school that I have was the Claremont Damien baseball game. The scouts were in the stands to watch the Damien pitchers not Claremont players per se. Mark came up to the plate with bases loaded a rips a walk off home run helping Claremont beat Damien with the scouts taking note of Mark's incredible athleticism. His amazing speed served him well as a defensive back and running back playing for the legendary Coach Espier Kaiser at Claremont.
Mark was not only a gifted athlete, he was also a bright student who’s attendance was a little “on the lite” side at times. Claremont High was one of the first schools in the country to have what was called the modular system i.e. go to class for an hour then off for three hours. This was to prepare students for college. Some students thought this was a great way to take additional time off than the scheduled allowed for. With all that said, Mark might have missed a few classes on occasion and then attend the class during exam day whereby he would “Ace” the test. He was indeed gifted!
Chapter 3 Final Chapter on Earth, New Chapter with the Lord:
As my larger than life brother leaves us until we meet again, he left an amazing legacy. Mark was Director of Sales at Beam Global where he enjoyed a successful career over the years. He loved spending time with his family & friends and was known on “occasion” to open a fine bottle of cabernet or sip on Basil Hayden and a good cigar. Mark’s eulogy would not be complete without recognizing his family & friends for being there with him over the past few years. My bother Mark, we love you God Bless you and Go Raiders & Go Dodgers, Love you Brother!!!!!!!
