In Memory

Mary Maxine Martin - Class Of 1968

July 2, 1950 - April 1, 2024

Fort Mill, South Carolina - Mary Martin West left this earth on April 1, 2024, far before any of us were ready to let her go. 73 years young, Mary drifted off, resting on her beloved's shoulder, and as we imagine, was received directly into the arms of her savior.

Mary's celebration of life will be held on April 26, 2024, 1 pm, at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, SC*.

Mary was born in McKinney, TX, and spent most of her childhood in Claremont, CA. She met the love of her life, Rich, on a tennis court, and eventually marched over to his apartment and invited herself to dinner. Rich has been charmed and enamored with her ever since. Mary and Rich had a beautiful life, married for almost 49 years. Together they raised two children and were thrilled to become Nonny and Poppy to their two grandchildren.

Mary was a friend, sister, mother, or all of the above, to anyone that was open to receiving her acceptance and love. Mary lit up a room, and the light was so bright, you couldn't help but shine, too. Fervently involved in the lives of her children, she kept her doors open to all. Displaced youth, young adults, or any in need of a little love, have always found comfort in her presence. She laughed often, and was especially tickled by her own sense of humor. Mary found joy in being silly, playing pranks, good card games, spending time with anyone from the cast of characters she loved, and in her faith in Jesus Christ.

Mary was predeceased by her father, Dr. Hugh Martin and her mother, Shirley Martin. She is survived by her brother Johnny Martin of La Verne, CA, her husband Richard West, her two children Brian Martin West and Kimberly West Bryan, and her two grandchildren, West Atticus Bryan and Hollis Deborah Bryan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary West can be made to the Youth Ministry Program at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill, SC.

How heartbreaking to learn that Mary is gone. She was a light to all who knew her. Much love to her family.

The short periods of time I was around Mary in 1967 and '68 left me with the conviction that Steve Sok was one of the most fortunate and intelligent of young men I knew.  Mary was 'sweet' in every good connotation that word has.  Eternity is the richer for her being.
