Manuela Huerta Matute, loving wife of the late Juan Matute. Survived by her three children, Juan Matute (Lynne), Maria Eugenia Matute-Bianchi, and Raul Matute (Vicky), her four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
She left Albuquerque at the age of 15 to come to California. She graduated as the first Mexican-American girl from Claremont High School and graduated from Pomona College in 1935.
During the Depression, she was one of the Mexican Players of Padua Hills. Her teaching career began at Garfield High School and ended at South Shores in San Pedro.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts in her memory be made to Pomona College, in care of Don Pattison, Office of Donor Relations, 550 North College Avenue; Claremont, CA 91711 for scholarships for Latino students. A Memorial Service will be held at Noon on February 5th at the Pacific Unitarian Church, 5621 Montemalega Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes.
