Barbara Jeanne Yerkes (Lumley) - Class Of 1942

Barbara Jeanne Yerkes (Lumley)

Born Aug. 26, 1924, in Pomona Valley Hospital, Barbara Yerkes (Lumley) spent her early years on a dairy farm in Chino.

Her family then moved to Claremont in 1935 where her father, Raymond Yerkes, **built houses from river rock and mortar that are still standing today, and have been declared historical monuments. Barbara's mother, Nea Pauline Yerkes died the same year they moved and Barbara assumed the responsibilities of caring for her three younger brothers and sisters as well as attending school in Claremont, graduating from Claremont High School.

She met Carl Lumley through mutual family friends and in 1944 they were married, moving to Whittier were she was secretary for the chamber of commerce. Carl had a career with Standard Oil Co. She and her husband rounded out their happy family with two sons, Dennis and Doug. The family eventually moved to Anaheim in 1960. Barbara received a degree in English from Fullerton City College while raising her two sons, and went to work as a credit data operator at TRW in Orange. She retired from TRW after 15 years and Carl retired from Standard Oil. With their two sons already out on their own, Barbara and Carl moved to Apple Valley in the early 1980s where they settled to enjoy those retirement years. Barbara enjoyed her garden and working in her yard. She created colorful cards and calendars on her computer and blessed family and friends with them. She loved the High Desert area and had many friends.

Barbara had a stroke in January 2001, from which she never fully recovered. She went to be with her Lord peacefully on April 16, 2001. She was preceded in death by her sister, Joanne Price. She is survived by her beloved husband Carl Marlow Lumley; sons Dennis and Doug; daughter-in-law Corki; sister Raylene; brother-in-law Fred Kurtz; brother Bob; sister-in-law Sara-Ann Yerkes; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

** House at 316 South Mills Avenue. The parcel that this house sits on is partially within the city of Montclair. This house was built in 1932 by Raymond Yerkes. During the two years that this house was under construction, Yerkes was living in Pomona. Yerkes was helped by Stys and another neighbor, Merle Mead. The house was built of stone as well as concrete forms from construction sites of Pomona College. A railroad tie was used to support the large window in the living room. In 1938, the garage was converted into a studio. The interior walls and cupboards of the studio were made of wood recovered from a railroad car.
