Genevieve Mertzke (LaTulippe)

Aug 25 1925 - Jul 1, 2017

Our amazing mother and grandmother, Genevieve (Genny) LaTulippe, passed away July 1st at the age of 91. She was born to Arthur and Virginia Mertzke, August 25, 1925, in Evanston, Illinois. She moved to Altadena, California and then to Claremont, California, where she graduated from Claremont High School. Graduating from Pomona College in 1946, she was active in drama and was elected to the Mortar Board. Paramount Studios offered her a screen test but by then she had met Alton F. Baker Jr. and they married in April 1947. After a move to Eugene, Oregon, the couple had four children: Susan (McDonald); Alton F. Baker III (Tony); Sarah Baker and Robin (O'Connor).

Genny was a founding member in 1946 of the PEO Chapter DH and stayed active in the chapter until her death. She also sang in the Congregational Church music program for many years.

Divorced in 1976, she later married Leodore LaTulippe and they moved to Winchester Bay after purchasing a commercial fishing boat. Eventually moving to Creswell, the couple began a long-haul trucking business in 1981 that took them all over the western United States for 14 years. Lee passed away in 1998, and Genny stayed in their home until moving to an independent living residence for the past six years.

Genny was a wonderful entertainer and enjoyed cooking all her life. She earned a first place blue ribbon at the Lane County Fair for her homemade bread. Other hobbies included reading, antique shopping, gardening, needlework, knitting, writing and painting.

She is survived by her four children: Susan McDonald; Tony Baker and his wife, Wendy; Sarah Baker; and Robin O'Connor and her husband, Sean; as well as grandchildren: Nick Johnston, Steve Johnston, Ben Baker, Lindsay Baker, Timothy O'Connor, Sarah O'Connor; and great-granddaughters: Ashlee Johnston and Emma Johnston.

Her surviving step-children are: Charetta Creason and Roche LaTulippe; step-grandchildren: Amy Creason, Alex LaTulippe and Caitlin LaTulippe; and step-great-granddaughter, Halena Creason.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Lane Memorial Gardens, Eugene, Oregon.
