Dr. Fredda Blanchard-Fields died from complications of cancer on August 3, 2010, in Atlanta. Fredda had been battling cancer for months and she requested that her struggle remain private and discreet. She was 61 years old and lived in Atlanta since 1993 in the Little Five Points area. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, August 7, 2010. Fredda will be buried at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, GA. 

Fredda grew up in California, where she attended San Diego State University and received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. Following doctoral work at Wayne State University, she joined the faculty at Louisiana State University, where she taught for 10 years before joining the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1993. In June of 2009, she was appointed Chair of the School of Psychology after having served for a year as interim chair. In addition, Fredda was the editor of the premier journal in her field, Psychology and Aging, and was awarded the Distinguished Mentor Award of the American Psychological Association. The College of Sciences and the School of Psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology plan to honor Fredda's memory with a symposium on cognitive aging to take place in the spring of 2011. 

Fredda was a loving matriarch who cherished and adored her family. Fredda was a successful and respected research psychologist as well as a career and life mentor to many students and faculty. She was also a world traveler who thoroughly enjoyed learning about other cultures. In addition, Fredda developed a passion for dance later in life, specifically Tango and was an open, free spirit who will be missed and honored by many. 

Fredda is survived by her two sons, Michael and Brandon; her daughters-in-law Robin and Stephanie; and her four grandchildren Chloe, Tyler, Trey, and Shelby. She is also survived by her sister Susan in San Diego; niece and nephew Alison and Daniel.
