Not being a football player I did not know Coach Haertel as well as other of my classmates who did, But, he was a more than decent guy who treated me fairly in the limited interactions we did have and I liked him. Until today I had no idea he was an alum. RIP Coach
My memories of Eddie Haertel go back to 1949 and 1950 when we played a lot of softball together - I was 13 or 14, and Eddie was two years younger. I think we were the only left hand batters on those teams, and despite our age difference we were close buddies. Eddie batted left but threw right. He was a natural hitter and had a beautiful swing, even as a 12-year-old. I finished up high school at Webb, so we actually played against each other in later years. I followed his career, particularly in football - watching the CHS games at Alumni Field during my first two years at Pomona. I look back on those summers when we played together as some of the best time of my life - I am sorry that our contacts ended so soon.
