Mr. Bookhout may have been a tough teacher but he had a really big heart.  He believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.  He made Chemistry fun.  He would do great experiments that grabbed my imagination.  He made Chemistry come alive.  Mr. Bookhout  always hounded the students to wear their googles and wear their aprons.  I didn't follow his instructions and I got a chemical burn.  He was great about it.  He could of made an example of me...but he didn't.  I will never forget when there was a riot on campus and I was out in the quad.  Mr. Bookhout opened the classroom door and pulled me out of danger.  He was courageous.

I didn't understand chemistry at all - survived by copying stuff from the guy sitting next to me. I remember his big laugh as he entertained us with ceertain experiments, at one point running around the room to let everyone take a whif of butyric acid whicgh smelled like vomit!

Mr. Bookhout was a terrific teacher, though strict. I learned a lot about chemistry from him, but we also had fun in his class. He could be tough, but we always had Mitch Gordon in the class to keep things light. Mr. Bookhout would always scowl at Mitch, but I think he was secretly amused by his wisecracks, as he had a pretty wry sense of humor himself. I remember the time he took several of us to a regional science fair in his Pontica Grand Prix - fairly sporty, sharp car - and I began to realize there was more to Mr. Bookhout than I was likely to know. Rest in peace, Master B.

I'm thankful for all the patience and knowledge Mr. Bookhout shared year after year with his students. Though I was not an apt student, I certainly was grateful to get a grasp on chemistry. The labs were such viral learning opportunities. Never forget the mols per litre, nor the titration experiments.
