Sandra "Sandy" Lu Briney (Scherer) - Class Of 1958

Sandra Sandy Lu Briney (Scherer)

April 23, 1940 - May 2, 2005

Memorial services for Sandra B. Scherer, 65, of Bandon, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at Bandon Christian Fellowship, 1190 Face Rock Drive, with the Rev. Matt Fox officiating.

Sandra was born April 23, 1940, in St. Francis, Kansas, the only surviving child born to Mildred Maud (Scoby) and Guy Alvie Briney. She died May 2, 2005, in Bandon.

Although her father farmed land in South Dakota, Kansas and Colorado, he also built a home for his family in Southern California, where Sandra went to live at the age of 3.

She grew up in San Dimas and La Verne, Calif., graduating from Claremont High School in 1958.

In 1959, she married **Wayne R. Scherer Jr. (CHS '56 - who sadly passed away June 5, 2014). She took classes at Mount San Antonio College and later worked as a medical receptionist. By September 1962, she was the busy, full-time mother of three children, Greg, Guy and Bonnie Scherer.

Growing up, Sandra loved animals, especially her horses, and spent much of her time horseback riding. She also was very active in sports such as field hockey, soccer and tennis, as well as belonging to two young women's softball leagues.

In August 1971, Sandra and Wayne and the family moved to their beautiful cranberry farm in Bandon. During the initial years in Bandon, Sandra did volunteer work at Ocean Crest Elementary School and was involved in such things as local square dance club, a Thunderbird club, and The Great Commission Christian School next to Bradley Lake. She also closely followed her children's activities all the way through high school. In time, her activities became limited due to advanced stages of rheumatoid arthritis.

Her final years were spent living in the Bandon home she had built near the lake where she was baptized.

She is survived by her son, C. Gregory Scherer and wife, Kathy, of Tualatin and sons, Nathanael and Aaron Scherer; son, Guy R. Scherer and wife, Noni, of Bandon and sons, Logan and Cole Scherer; and daughter, Bonnie S. Iverson and husband, Rich, of Bandon and daughters, Halley and Elle Iverson.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Arthritis Foundation, http://www.arthritis.org.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
