Betty Jane Harper (Bottorf) - Class Of 1944

Betty Jane Harper (Bottorf)

Jul 20, 1926 - Sep 28, 2021

Betty Bottorf passed away peacefully in her home in Corona Del Mar on September 28, at the age of 95, just 4 months after the passing of her husband of 69 years, Deane Bottorf.

Betty (Harper) was born and raised in Whitewright, TX, the middle of 3 children. The Harper family moved to Claremont, CA when Betty was in her teens. She graduated from Claremont High School in 1944 and attended Chaffey College.

Betty and Deane met while he was working, playing piano in a restaurant - they fell in love and never looked back. They were married in 1952. The Bottorfs settled in Sierra Madre after living on the road to pursue Deane's musical career. Betty raised their 2 children there and volunteered countless hours for the PTA, Sierra Madre Rose Float Assoc, and other community groups.

In 1968 the family moved to Corona Del Mar when Deane took a position with Laguna Beach Schools and Betty continued to give her time and efforts to the PTA, CDMHS Boosters, and the Orange County Philharmonic Society. Betty was a ball of energy and a fantastic organizer, and she was a perfect fit when she began working at Sports Depot in the 1970's. There she was instrumental in planning events for the Orange County Sports Celebrities, the LA Rams Booster Club, and the annual Irrelevant Week activities in Newport Beach.

In her later years, Betty continued to give her time and energy to others, volunteering at the Oasis Senior Center and as a docent at the John Wayne Airport. She was a cherished neighbor of the "flower streets" and was always available for a smile, a hug, a conversation and a good laugh.

Throughout her busy life, Betty's number one priority was her family, nurturing and supporting us all. She loved large family gatherings and many fun-filled parties took place in the Bottorf home through the years. Betty ("Nana") truly treasured her time with her grandsons and then great-grandchildren.

Betty was a beautiful light in our lives and is dearly missed by those she leaves behind - daughter Cinda (John) Robinson, son Doug, grandsons Drew (Kelsy) and Adam (Damaris) Kenworthy, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and step-grandchildren. At her request, a family gathering will be planned to celebrate her life.
