CLAREMONT, CA — An Aliso Viejo resident shared her family's pain after learning her younger brother took his own life. Victor died on April 10. A vigil was established at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, to be held on April 27.

"I am still in disbelief," she said of learning of Victor's death. "None of us saw this coming."

A Claremont high school senior, Victor Ojeda was "a shy and sweet kid who loved to laugh and play video games" was a few months away from graduating high school and turning 18-years-old, they said.

Instead, his life came to a tragic end.

"Nobody plans for their teenage son's death," family spokesperson Fabian Ojeda said over GoFundMe page established to help the family through this time of grief and suffering. "Victor's parents are extremely heartbroken and shocked." A GoFundMe account was established to raise funds for the unexpected costs of planning his funeral.

Victor was the youngest of five older siblings, they said. He was a young uncle who loved his niece and nephews. He was a student at Sumner Elementary School and El Roble Intermediate School.

The principal of Claremont High School spoke out on Victor's death, saying their "thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. It is important the entire community pull together."

As for the family, "nothing can bring (Victor) back," Fabian Ojeda wrote. "Time, love, and support can help mend the hurt they're feeling."

Rocio Ojeda reminded all that you never know what someone else is going through.

"Please, check in with your loved ones, and make sure they know you love them."

Victor will be buried at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery on April 27.

Claremont High School student has died, counseling available for peers

Claremont High School principal Brett O’Connor notified CHS families today about the death of Victor Ojeda, who was a senior at the school.

“The CUSD Crisis Response Team has been on campus all day,” Mr. O’Connor said. “We will have extra counselors on campus for the next few days to support students and staff.”

Victor previously attended Sumner Elementary School and El Roble Intermediate School.

“It is very likely your student will talk to you about Victor’s death. Even if your student did not know Victor, your student might still have a strong reaction to this crisis,” the principal cautioned.

Mr. O’Connor encouraged parents and caregivers to pay close attention to their child’s mood and behavior over the next few days and weeks. He asks families to allow kids to express their feelings without judgment. Counseling is available through any student’s guidance counselor.

“I know our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. It is important the entire community pull together,” Mr. O’Connor shared. “In times like these, we are reminded that every single adult in our school community contributes to our students’ safety and well-being. Thank you for caring, loving, and doing all you do for the students in CUSD.”

No further information can be shared at this time.
