Virginia Ruth Smith Child, 79, of Jacksonville, Oregon, died November 25, 2007 at Three Fountains Nursing Home in Medford, Oregon, two months after a third stroke. Services will be held at the Jacksonville Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Medford, Oregon, Nov. 29, 2007.
Virginia was born April 25, 1928, in Bogota, Texas, to Arthur and Myrtle Pecolia (Harris) Smith. The family moved to Claremont, Calif. in 1936 and Virginia Attended Claremont Elementary, Claremont High, and Chaffey College. She met her future husband, Spencer B. Child (Class of 1946) at Claremont High and they were married in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 2, 1947. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary last June.
Virginia devoted her life to providing a loving home for her husband, three girls and two boys, with only occasional work outside the home. She was a devoted church member and served the Lord in many leadership and teaching callings over the years. Her children, grand and great-grandchildren were a joy in her life. She also loved being with friends, RVing, cruises, the beauties of nature, and eating out. She was a "burger queen." Home was always the center of love and comfort to her.
She is survived by her husband, of Jacksonville; her four children, Cynthia Donalson, Bountiful, Utah; Deborah Mitchell, Sandy, Utah; Brian Child, Phoenix, AZ; Brett Child, Highlands Ranch, CO; many relatives and 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Melanie, died in an automobile accident in 1973. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; sisters, Fern, Hazel, Maurine; and brothers, Rex and Raymond. Virginia's morals, integrity and loving character will always be remembered and treasured.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of a contribution to the LDS humanitarian fund in care of Bishop Kelly Thompson, 1575 Redwood Dr., Central Point, Oregon, 97502. Arrangements are entrusted to Perl Funeral Home, Medford, Oregon.
