James Rankin Jim Smith

James Rankin Smith, 70, of Claremont died September 1, 2007 at home. 

Born in Washington, D.C., he was a Claremont resident for 55 years. Retired, he was a brake and front end mechanic for 30 years and was the owner-operator of Bill's Brake shop in Claremont during the 60's and 70's. A Claremont High School graduate (1955), he attended Mt. SAC, UC Davis and Cal Poly Pomona, and received his degree from Citru s College. 
 
Mr. Smith was a member of the Pomona First Baptist Church. He also was a member and past master of the Claremont Masonic Lodge #436; was a volunteer with the Claremont Fire Dept. during the 1960's; worked with the Claremont Little League and was an advisor for Job's Daughters and De Molay. 
 
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Kay of Claremont; daughter, Deborah (Dan) Contreras, son, William P. Smith, grandsons, Dustin and David Contreras and granddaughter and grandson, Jordyn and Grant Smith, al l of Claremont; sisters, Florence (Art) Johnston of Bowie, Maryland, Jackie (Dan) Hanlon of Claremont and Pat Newhall of Apple Valley. Graveside services will be held Monday, September 10, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Oak Park Cemetery. 
 
Memorial Contributions may be made to Markeen Otis Beam Memorial Scholarship Fund, Azusa Pacific University School of Nursing, 901 E. Alosta Ave., Azusa, CA 91702. Todd Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

He married Edith "Kay" Otis (CHS '58) in 1958.  Kay passed away on April 19, 2014.
