A memorial service for Gay Arbuthnot, 69, will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 in Newport Beach. Ms. Arbuthnot died Oct. 6 at her home in Newport Beach. (Call 949-933-2520 for memorial service information.)

She was born April 27, 1944 in Covina, Calif., the daughter of Raymond James and Grace Neah Mendenhall Arbuthnot. She grew up on the family's citrus farm in La Verne, where she developed a lifelong love of horses.

She earned a bachelor's degree in 1966 from the University of Colorado and later earned a master's degree from the University of La Verne.

She taught for a total of 40 years in Costa Mesa Schools, including 34 years as a high school English teacher. In her retirement, she enjoyed working with her horses and traveling.

Survivors include her son, Gavin David Garringer of Costa Mesa; her sister, Nancy Herrington of Rancho Santa Fe; a nephew, Neil Herrington of Fairfax, VA; and a niece, Anne Andress of Nashville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Giorgio Magnolfi (1962)

I still remember her as she was 50 years ago, and I,m glad to do so.
